Hire 1099 Contractors

Find independent contractors, write a clear project brief, compare candidates and post a 1099 opportunity on 1099WORK.

Hiring an independent contractor starts with a defined service or project. Describe the result you need, the location, the budget and the evidence of experience that matters. Use the contractor directory to explore profiles or post an opportunity so interested contractors can respond.

Write a brief contractors can quote

Include the deliverables, project boundaries, expected timeline and acceptance criteria. Explain whether the engagement is remote, on-site or territory-based. Distinguish required qualifications from preferences so suitable candidates do not exclude themselves unnecessarily.

Include in the posting:

  • The service, project or product line and who the client is.
  • Work location, territory and any travel expectations.
  • Compensation structure and the payment schedule.
  • Licenses, insurance or credentials genuinely required for the work.
  • How candidates should apply and what examples they should provide.

Compare relevant experience

Ask for examples that resemble the work you need done. A portfolio, reference or explanation of a completed project can be more useful than a generic job title. Check the scope and current status of any credential instead of assuming that a profile or badge proves every qualification.

For sales engagements, discuss existing customer relationships, territory coverage, product training and conflicts with other lines. For project work, compare the proposed approach, dependencies and handoff process.

Agree on terms before work begins

Put the scope, price, payment milestones, confidentiality expectations and termination terms in writing. Decide how changes are requested and priced. Keep a record of the agreement, invoices and acceptance of deliverables.

Worker classification depends on the actual relationship and applicable federal and state rules. A contract label or payment through a platform does not determine status. Have the engagement reviewed when the distinction is unclear.

Choose the next step

Browse profiles if you already know the service and territory you need. Post an opportunity if you want contractors to assess a specific brief. Review the current pricing page before choosing a posting plan.
