1099 Work Platform
What 1099WORK does, who it is for, and how the marketplace works.
If you are researching 1099 work platform, you are usually trying to answer one of three questions — what the work pays, how the tax treatment differs, and where to find engagements. This page answers those with published data rather than generalities.
The biggest 1099 occupations
The concentration is uneven: home health and personal care aides, registered nurses, and secretaries and administrative assistants account for a disproportionate share, because those trades are structurally independent rather than incidentally so. The 1099 estimates below apply 1099WORK's per-occupation contractor share to BLS employment — they are estimates, and BLS itself does not publish the split.

The best-paying 1099 work
Software Developer leads on median pay at $133,080, with the top decile at $211,450. The table below is filtered to occupations where independent work is genuinely common — a high median in an occupation that is 95% W-2 is not an opportunity. Remember that every figure is a W-2-and-1099 blend: to match them as a contractor, multiply by roughly 1.33 for payroll tax, unpaid time and self-funded benefits.
| Occupation | Median pay | 90th percentile | Est. 1099 share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software Developer | $133,080 | $211,450 | 30% |
| Financial Advisor | $102,140 | — | 50% |
| Consultant | $101,190 | $174,140 | 40% |
| Physical Therapist | $101,020 | $132,500 | 30% |
| Medical Sales Rep | $100,070 | $194,890 | 45% |

Why a dedicated 1099 marketplace
General job boards are built around employment. Their filters, their applicant flows and their employer tooling all assume a hiring process that ends in payroll, so contract work arrives as an afterthought — usually as staffing-agency postings that are W-2 in everything but the listing.
A 1099 engagement needs different machinery on both sides: a verified contractor profile that can be reused across engagements, a W-9 and agreement flow that happens before the first payment rather than after, and a scope-and-invoice model instead of an offer letter.
What the workflow looks like
Companies post an opportunity with a defined scope. Contractors apply from a profile they built once — credentials, licences and references verified ahead of time rather than re-collected for every engagement. Agreements, onboarding documents and payment run through the same place, which is also what produces the documentary record that supports contractor status if anyone ever asks.
The practical effect is a shorter cycle. Most of the delay in engaging a contractor is document collection and verification, and moving that in front of the search removes it from the critical path.
Self-employment tax
Self-employment tax is 15.3% — 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare — charged on 92.35% of net profit rather than on gross receipts. The Social Security half stops at the 2026 wage base of $184,500; Medicare has no ceiling. Half of what you pay is deductible against income tax, which softens the headline rate.
The IRS wants estimated payments four times a year — mid-April, mid-June, mid-September and mid-January — and charges an underpayment penalty when you miss them, even if you settle up in full at filing.
Deductible for most independent contractors:
- Mileage at the current IRS standard rate, or actual vehicle costs
- A home office used regularly and exclusively for the business
- Health insurance premiums, via the self-employed health insurance deduction
- Tools, equipment, software subscriptions and professional licences
- Continuing education and certification tied to your existing trade
The classification test that matters
Calling an engagement 1099 does not make it 1099. The IRS looks at behavioural control, financial control and the nature of the relationship — who sets the hours, who supplies the tools, who carries the risk of loss, and whether the arrangement looks permanent.
Several states apply an ABC test that is materially stricter than the federal one, and can reach a different answer on the same facts. Misclassification is assessed against the hiring party, not the worker, but it disrupts both sides — back taxes, penalties and reclassified benefits. Neither 1099WORK nor this page is a substitute for advice from a CPA or an employment lawyer who knows your facts.
Finding the work on 1099WORK
1099WORK is a marketplace built specifically for 1099 engagements rather than a general job board with a contract filter bolted on. Companies post opportunities, independent contractors build a verified profile once, and both sides handle agreements, onboarding and payment in the same place. Coverage is nationwide.
1099WORK launched as 1099REPS, serving independent 1099 medical sales reps, and that vertical is still the deepest part of the network. The platform now covers the wider 1099 economy — trades, healthcare, transportation, technology, professional services — under the 1099WORK name, and 1099REPS links continue to resolve here.
Frequently asked questions
Is 1099 work better than a W-2 job?
It depends entirely on rate and stability. 1099 wins on control, deductibility and upside; W-2 wins on predictability, benefits and unemployment cover.
How often do 1099 contractors pay taxes?
Quarterly. The IRS expects estimated payments in mid-April, mid-June, mid-September and mid-January, and charges an underpayment penalty for missing them even if you pay in full at filing.
Do I need an LLC to work 1099?
No. A sole proprietor can accept 1099 work under their own name and Social Security number, and many contractors start that way. An LLC adds liability separation and lets you elect S-corp taxation once profit is high enough for the payroll-tax saving to beat the extra filing cost.
