1099 Sales Jobs
Explore independent sales opportunities. Compare product lines, territory coverage, lead sources and commission terms before choosing an engagement.
A 1099 sales engagement can involve finding new customers, developing a territory or representing a product line. Start with the sales search below, then check what the company expects you to sell, who buys it and how you earn payment. A commission rate alone does not tell you what the opportunity is worth.
Match the sales process to your experience
Ask whether the role involves prospecting, appointment setting, demonstrations, closing or account management. Some companies supply leads; others expect you to build your own pipeline. Confirm the buyer, typical order size and purchasing process with the company instead of treating projected earnings as a guarantee.
For a product line, request training materials and an explanation of fulfillment, customer support and returns. If you already represent other companies, check product conflicts and the time needed to support each line.
Read the commission terms together
Compare the commission basis, payment trigger and timing as a set. A percentage of revenue differs from a percentage of gross profit. An order may need to ship or be paid before commission is due. Ask for a worked example using the proposed agreement.
| Term | Question to resolve |
|---|---|
| Commission basis | What amount is the percentage applied to? |
| Payment timing | Which event earns commission and when is it paid? |
| Territory | Which accounts, channels and locations are included? |
| Repeat orders | Are renewals and reorders commissionable? |
| Adjustments | How are returns, discounts and unpaid invoices handled? |
| Expenses | Who pays for travel, samples, tools and training? |
Make your application specific
Explain which buyers you understand, the area you cover and how you would approach the product. Give examples of relevant work without sharing confidential customer information. Ask what a successful first engagement would involve and which support the company provides.
Use current listings to check availability. The medical-sales guide is a useful starting point for device and healthcare product lines; other sales categories depend on what companies are currently posting.
